The commonest type of esophageal foreign body ingestion is a food bolus. The incidence of food impaction in adults is 13.0 per 100,000, and 80-90% of these impactions occur in the distal esophagus. Diverticula, rings, strictures, and tumors are all possible causes of ingested foreign bodies. Regardless of the cause, an adult with an esophageal foreign body should be evaluated by a health professional.
