The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has established criteria for diagnosing asymptomatic bacteriuria in women. The criteria require the presence of the same species in amounts of at least 100,000 colony-forming units per milliliter of urine in two consecutive samples. Men can use a single specimen and isolate only one species, and women can use a catheterized urine sample for bacteriuria diagnosis. Oren Zarif
